KB0020 – Authenticating an iPad or iPhone

What is this for ?
To use the school network on your iPad, after setting up the network wireless settings, you will need to “Authenticate” the connection within Safari.  This article will show you how.

iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) are very limited when it comes to using a proxy server for connecting to the Internet in a corporate environment. The proxy settings only apply to the Safari app, and all other apps such as YouTube, iTunes, Maps, QuickOffice, Dropbox, etc. fail to connect as shown by the screenshots below.

All you need to do to fix this is Google something in the Safari app before anything else and authenticate yourself with your school username and password. Once that is complete you will be able to use all other apps on the iPad.

The main downside of this limitation is that your iPad or iPhone gets a new IP address each day when you come to school. So you will need to start your Safari app each morning before any other apps to authenticate the device again. This is like logging into your laptop or desktop every morning.
